The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing is a prestigious honor, compromised of three races, Preakness Stakes, the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. Becoming a Triple Crown winner is the greatest honor any horse racing team strives to achieve throughout their racing career. Only 12 horses in history have won the Triple Crown, proving just how hard it is to complete the trifecta.
Belmont Experiences is here to breakdown each victory, pedigree and team of the 12 Triple Crown™ winners for you in a 12-part series occurring every Tuesday. We are starting our Triple Crown™ series with Sir Barton who was the first to complete the trifecta in 1919, saddle-up, because here we go.
Sir Barton, 1919
Putting his stamp on history as the first Triple Crown™ winner, Sir Barton started his season debut at the Kentucky Derby® and road that victory through to the 1919 Belmont Stakes. Bred in Kentucky by John E. Madden and later sold to J.K.L Ross in late 1918, many believed Sir Barton had potential as the pacemaker going into his 3-year-old season. Ridden by Jockey, Johnny Loftus, he went on to win the Kentucky Derby® by 5 lengths, Preakness Stakes by 4 lengths, and then Belmont Stakes, setting an American record at the time for a 1 mile and 3/8 race.
After winning those three Triple Crown™ races, Sir Barton went on to win a fourth race in between the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, the Withers Stakes, and was honored as the 1919 Horse of the Year!
