The Triple Crown™ Winner of 1941 #TripleCrownTuesday

Posted by Jazzy Morgan on Dec 12, 2017, 9:00:00 AM

Winning the Triple Crown™ is a prestigious honor. Comprised of three races; Preakness Stakes, the Kentucky Derby® and Belmont Stakes, becoming a Triple Crown™ winner is the greatest honor that any horse racing team strives to achieve throughout their racing career. With that being said, only 12 horses in history have won the Triple Crown, proving just how hard it is to complete the trifecta.

Belmont Experiences is breaking down each of the 12 Triple Crown™ winners for you in a 12-part series occurring every Tuesday. This week’s Triple Crown winner is one of horse racing’s most unpredictable horses in history, Whirlaway.

Horse-Racing's Creature of Habit

Whirlaway often had a habit of bearing out, veering towards the middle of the track, which would result in him losing the race. His trainer began to create habits for the colt in order to get him to do what he wanted on the racetrack. Whirlaway was repeatedly referred to as a horse with a quirky personality which led to his unpredictable nature.

While preparing for the Kentucky Derby®, Whirlaway’s problem of bearing out grew and his race team rushed to come up with ways to prevent him from costing them the race. His trainer, Ben A. Jones, fitted him with a full-cup blinker, which covered his entire eye, to train him to stay on one side of the track. Prior to the start of the 1941 Kentucky Derby®, Jones cut a hole in the blinker so Whirlaway could see through a narrow field of vision forcing him to stay straight. This resulted in a win for the colt with a Derby  record that ties the current 2015 record of an eight-length win.

Jockey, Eddie Arcaro, led Whirlaway to another victory at the Preakness Stakes, winning by five and a half lengths. Just under a month later, 30,000 fans witnessed Arcaro lead the three-year-old thoroughbred to dominate the track at Belmont Park and win at the Belmont Stakes, making him the fifth Triple Crown™ winner in horse racing history.
