Who Earned the Triple Crown™ in 1948 at the Belmont Stakes?

Winning the Triple Crown™ is a prestigious honor. Comprised of three races; Preakness Stakes, the Kentucky Derby® and Belmont Stakes, becoming a Triple Crown™ winner is the greatest honor that any horse racing team strives to achieve throughout their racing career. Only 12 horses in history have won the Triple Crown™, proving just how hard it is to complete the trifecta.

Belmont Experiences is breaking down each of the 12 Triple Crown™ winners for you in a 12-part series occurring every Tuesday. This week’s Triple Crown™ winner is the ultimate overachiever, Citation, who was expected to win this year with no excuses.

Citation was not given a choice when it came to winning the 1948 Triple Crown™. As a two-year-old the young colt had an outstanding year, winning eight out of nine races he competed in. Once he turned three, Citation only got better, blowing the competition out of the water at the Flamingo Stakes.

Citation and his team hit a bump in the road when his jockey, Al Snider, disappeared after a boating accident. Eddie Arcaro stepped in but lost his first race with Citation, creating worry for the team, but they came into stride for the 1948 Kentucky Derby®.

There was no contest during Derby weekend where Citation took the lead and won by three and a half lengths. Ben Jones, Citation’s trainer, was very eager for the Preakness Stakes, as he was so sure his horse would win. Citation did not let him down and dominated the racetrack during the second leg of the Triple Crown™, winning by a huge eleven lengths.

As he entered the last leg, Belmont Stakes, Citation soared through the track with flying colors and claimed the Triple Crown™ at Belmont Park.
